Challenge: With small businesses across the country struggling, how could American Express, a long-time champion of small business, help in a meaningful way?

Solution: To rally people to local businesses, we created a national (now global) shopping holiday, Small Business Saturday. Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday became an annual event and helped inform a worldwide movement of locally minded shoppers. Since its inception, hundreds of millions have celebrated the day by shopping small, even President Obama himself.
